Tom walked in among the willows, and he crawled into a cave of shade to lie down. And Noah followed him.
âGonna sleep here,â Tom said.
âTom!â
âYeah?â
âTom, I ainât a-goinâ on.â
Tom sat up. âWhat you mean?â
âTom, I ainât a-gonna leave this here water. Iâm a-gonna walk on down this here river.â
âYouâre crazy,â Tom said.
âGet myself a piece a line. Iâll catch fish. Fella canât starve beside a nice river.â
Tom said, âHow âbout the famâly? How âbout Ma?â
âI canât heâp it. I canât leave this here water.â Noahâs wideset eyes were half closed. âYou know how it is, Tom. You know how the folks are nice to me. But they donât really care for me.â
âYouâre crazy.â
âNo, I ainât. I know how I am. I know theyâre sorry. ButâWell, I ainât a-goinâ. You tell MaâTom.â
âNow you look-a-here,â Tom began.
âNo. It ainât no use. I was in that there water. Anâ I ainât a-gonna leave her. Iâm a-gonna go now, Tomâdown the river. Iâll catch fish anâ stuff, but I canât leave her. I canât.â He crawled back out of the willow cave. âYou tell Ma, Tom.â He walked away.
Tom followed him to the river bank. âListen, you goddamn foolâââ
âIt ainât no use,â Noah said. âIâm sad, but I canât heâp it. I got to go.â He turned abruptly and walked downstream along the shore. Tom started to follow, and then he stopped. He saw Noah disappear into the brush, and then appear again, following the edge of the river. And he watched Noah growing smaller on the edge of the river, until he disappeared into the willows at last. And Tom took off his cap and scratched his head. He went back to his willow cave and lay down to sleep.
